The Hail Mary and Scripture

I think most people know that the Hail Mary is directly from Scripture.  But it is worth repeating.


The Hail Mary goes like this.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

In order to see its direct connection with Scripture, let me highlight the Scriptures.  I'll use the Douay Rheims because it containts the exact language.

Luke 1:28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, Full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women.

Luke 1:42 And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Granted, the next verse does not use the exact words, but "mother of my Lord" means "mother of my God".

Luke 1:43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

The final verse of the prayer is not a direct quote from Scripture either, but it is Biblical Theology.  It is the doctrine that God listens to those whom He loves the most.  Therefore, He listened to Moses over Aaron and Miriam (Numbers 12), Job over Job's friends (Job 42), and to David over Saul (1 Kings 18:12).  


The Epistle of St. James 5:[16] Confess therefore your sins to one another and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much. [17] Elias was a man passible like unto us: and with prayer he prayed that it might not rain upon the earth, and it rained not for three years and six months.[18] And he prayed again: and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.


And that is why we ask Mary to pray for us now and at the hour of our death.  Because God loves her above all others.

pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.Amen.
