I'm not sure. But I believe that St. John of the Cross and others have taught that Solomon was a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ.
1st. He is the Son of David.
2nd. He was annointed when he entered Jerusalem on King David's donkey.
3rd. Solomon's wives foreshadow our souls. We have one King, God. And we are, each and everyone of us, married to God. We are the Church:
Ephesians 5:22-24
King James Version (KJV)
22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
4. Solomon is also known for his wisdom and Jesus is Wisdom incarnate.
5. The Kingdom of David is a foreshadowing of the Church and Solomon's building up of the Kingdom is what we are supposed to do with the Church:
1 Corinthians 14:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
So, there is a great deal for which Solomon can be commended.
On the negative side however, Solomon did allow his wives to turn him into an idolater. In that sense, he is right to be critical of Solomon.
