California pro-life activist will be the guest Tuesday on 'Gospel of Life'

February 2, 2015

In 2007, the City Council in Oakland, California, passed an ordinance specifically to silence one pro-life advocate, who eventually would spend 18 days in jail.

That advocate, the Rev. Walter Hoye II, will be the guest on Radio Maria’s “Gospel of Life” show Tuesday, February 3 at 6 p.m. ET. Janet Morana, executive director of Priests for Life and co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, and Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, will co-host the hour-long show.

Listeners are invited to call in during the show to ask questions or make comments. The toll-free number to call is 866-333-6279. Those who would like to ask a question off the air may send an email toinfo@gospeloflife.com.
Rev. Hoye is the founder and president of the Issues4Life Foundation and the California Civil Rights Foundation. He is the founder of the Frederick Douglass Foundation of California, a core member of the National Black Pro-Life Coalition and a board member of The Morning Center, which was founded to provide free full-service maternity care for women in urban and under-served areas. He is the author of “Leadership from the IN|SIDE Out.”

When Rev. Hoye’s wife, Lori, gave birth to their son three months’ prematurely, he immediately understood that a “fetus” is a living, breathing human being and his pro-life activism began.

He became a regular presence outside the Family Planning Specialties Medical Group in Oakland, where he held a sign that said, “Jesus Loves You and Your Baby. Let us help you!”

Since there was no law on the books to prevent him from talking to women there, Oakland enacted one, making it illegal for anyone to come within eight feet of clinic patients.

Rev. Hoye was the first person convicted under the law. When a judge sentenced him to 30 days in jail, plus a fine and probation, he said the pastor could do community service if he would stay 1,000 yards away from the clinic entrance. Rev. Hoye chose jail and served 18 days. His appeal made it all the way to the federal appellate court, where the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals concluded that his prosecution was a “constitutionally invalid, content-based regulation of speech.”

On Jan. 23, Janet and Father Frank were both guest speakers at the Stand Up 4Life Rally and Walk in Oakland, organized annually by Rev. Hoye. The event was marred by the presence of raucous pro-abortion protesters who consider it racist to point out – as Rev. Hoye does every day – that abortion annually kills more African-Americans than all of the major diseases combined.
