Flagellation (self inflicted suffering), is it in Scripture?

Hi Lutero,

First, I want to point out that in this response, you are sharing many opinions.  But no Scripture whatsoever to support those opinions.
Then why is the Catholic Church in the Phillipines impressing now upon the local filipinos to give up that old taboo of self flagelaltion that has held them in bondage to this day?
Oh, wait!  What are you complaining about?  That the Church taught or did not teach flagellation?  Truly the song is come true, we can't win for losin' (Matt 11:16-17).

Does the Catholic Church say we MUST? Please provide the teaching.

Here is what the Scripture says however:
1 Peter 4:1
Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

1 Corinthians 9:27
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

In the New Testament persecution is described as something that we have to endure IF it comes our way AND NOT to stick our necks deliberately on the chopping block.

Unless you are a hero who doesn’t mind showing off in public just like how Jesus described the pharisees and priests were show off’s in public eye – wanting self pithiness and public attention.
Do you pretend not to know how athletes train even today?  Have you never trained for a sport?  Were you ever in the military?  Self inflicted pain is part of this culture.

I can’t believe you condone such practices.

I condone making sacrifices for our fellow man and for God:
1 Peter 2:5
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Catholic devotional practice is completely in line with Scripture, Lutero.  And you are simply outraged at that which Scripture teaches.

Show me your outrage from Scripture Lutero. All you are doing is posturing.  You claim to believe in Scripture remember?  That is what Scripture says and Catholic devotions are completely in line with Scripture.

Christians who suffered persecution in the early church was a result of their faith in Christ and they only endured it. To endure the pain of persecution of one’s faith in Christ is not the same as deliberately indulging in self flagellation – the later is only what people proudly want to show to the world their acts of falsehoods but their love is actually far away from Christ.
That was said like a true Pharisee Lutero.  Can you read those people's hearts too?

Lutero, when will you provide substantiation for your outrage?  Self sacrifice for the Kingdom of God, is strongly suggested in Scripture (Matthew 9:15;Matthew 10:42).

Sincerely,

De Maria

No one earns God's forgiveness. We merit it. Two different things. And we merit it by doing the works of our Father in imitation of Christ:

    1 Peter 2:21
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

    Mark 8:34
And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Those who do not merit God's forgiveness in suffering with Christ, make Christ's sacrifice of no avail for them:
    Matthew 10:38
And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

    Romans 8:17
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Come to the Catholic Church. You are following traditions of men.

    Sincerely,

    De Maria

  3. What's wrong with you, you nut! There is NOTHING you can do to "earn" your entry to heaven. Submit yourself to following scriptures immediately.

Colossians 2:13-14 - “When you were dead in the sins of your flesh, He CANCELED all the legal charges against us. He took the charges AWAY and nailed them to the cross.”

1 Corinthians 6:11 – “Some of you were once like that.” (caked in sin). “But you were WASHED and MADE HOLY. You were JUSTIFIED by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Hebrews 10:14 -- “With ONE sacrifice he PERFECTED FOREVER those who are saved.”

As you can see, entry to heaven was "already" earned for us all, and your spilled blood will never be clean enough to get you in. That's what Christ's Blood is for, so get over yourself!

But listen, instead of talking about beating yourself to a pulp ... Let's talk about your crazy popes. Did you know that if I call you "Racca" (fool) I'm in danger of hell fire?

So what would I get if I burn 2 million people at the stake during the Dark Ages.)

Based on the "Racca" warning, your popes, bishops, priests and nuns (who are "world famous" for cruelty and sex abuse)are in no way in heaven.

Where are they now? Here's a clue -- starts with an H and ends with an L. Write your answer here:

Nothing wrong with me. I thought there was something wrong with you, coconut.

There is NOTHING you can do to "earn" your entry to heaven.

But if you do nothing, God will not allow you into heaven.
Exodus 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Submit yourself to following scriptures immediately.

Colossians 2:13-14 - “When you were dead in the sins of your flesh, He CANCELED all the legal charges against us. He took the charges AWAY and nailed them to the cross.”

And they remain that way, IF we work out our salvation in fear and trembling:

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

1 Corinthians 6:11 – “Some of you were once like that.” (caked in sin). “But you were WASHED and MADE HOLY. You were JUSTIFIED by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Only if you kept the commandments of God:
      Romans 2:13King James Version (KJV)

13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

Hebrews 10:14 -- “With ONE sacrifice he PERFECTED FOREVER those who are saved.”

      If they obey Christ:
      Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

As you can see, entry to heaven was "already" earned for us all,

If we accept the sacrifice and unite ourselves to it by suffering with Christ:

Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

and your spilled blood will never be clean enough to get you in. That's what Christ's Blood is for, so get over yourself!

We get Christ's blood in the Eucharist. Where do you get it?

But listen, instead of talking about beating yourself to a pulp ... Let's talk about your crazy popes. Did you know that if I call you "Racca" (fool) I'm in danger of hell fire?

      Yes.

So what would I get if I burn 2 million people at the stake during the Dark Ages.)

You'll have to ask the Protestants who did that. The Catholic Church never burned anyone.

Based on the "Racca" warning, your popes, bishops, priests and nuns (who are "world famous" for cruelty and sex abuse)are in no way in heaven.

Any Catholics or Protestants and that includes you and I, who committed any crimes or sins, did it IN SPITE of Catholic Teaching. Not because of it.

Whereas, your doctrines and those of the Reformers and Protestants, lead people into sin. Example: They approve of divorce and remarriage.

Here's my clue for you. I allow God to judge me and everyone. If you think that you are judging people into hell, read this:

Matthew 7:1 Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
