Lutero said:
This might be the usual Catholic response... but to me... I thought it was tragic. She was crying out for the true Gospel and all she got was trust in your baptism... and your good works!
Is that the real Catholic gospel?
Calvino said to Lutero:
Yes....that IS the Catholic bad news. All Catholics are taught to trust in themselves and their works to save them. They are taught that Jesus merely opened the door to Heaven, but they must merit eternal life from God with their works. As with this poor woman, this often leads to despair among faithful Catholics who understand sin better than many.As with many other Catholics, this can also lead to arrogance and pride, as we often see on this board from them. These RCs believe they indeed have ALREADY earned Heaven with their works...and they really believe they are that holy, pious, and good. Those who are not familiar that much with Catholicism, don't let the RC apologists fool you. That candid story in the OP is typical and the true extent of Catholic understanding of salvation. Their soteriology is a mess....and they make it mostly about themselves. They are grateful that Jesus gives them the opportunity to earn Heaven with their works, however. Please note: what that priest said is common of the world in general.
In order to respond adequately, I must break down the message:
Yes....that IS the Catholic bad news. The Catholic Priest provided the Good News of Christ. It is the Gospel:
Hebrews 6:10
King James Version (KJV)
10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
All Catholics are taught to trust in themselves and their works to save them. Not true. If you ask a Catholic, "are you saved?" We always say, "I don't know. God knows."
On the other hand, Protestants claim to save themselves by their faith alone.
They are taught that Jesus merely opened the door to Heaven, but they must merit eternal life from God with their works.Let's see what Scripture says:
Revelation 22:12-15
King James Version (KJV)
12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
What? You don't believe that one? Oh, I know, you worship St. Paul instead of Jesus. Let's see what he says:
Romans 2:13
King James Version (KJV)
13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
As with this poor woman, this often leads to despair among faithful Catholics who understand sin better than many.Faithful Catholics understand sin better than any. Here's what Scripture says about sin:
1 John 3:4
King James Version (KJV)
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
As with many other Catholics, this can also lead to arrogance and pride, as we often see on this board from them. These RCs believe they indeed have ALREADY earned Heaven with their works...and they really believe they are that holy, pious, and good.Lol! That is the other way around. We aren't the ones bragging about being saved.
We leave all judgement to God.
Those who are not familiar that much with Catholicism, don't let the RC apologists fool you. That candid story in the OP is typical and the true extent of Catholic understanding of salvation. Their soteriology is a mess....and they make it mostly about themselves. They are grateful that Jesus gives them the opportunity to earn Heaven with their works, however.I don't see any of you quoting Scripture. Just "monologuing". No substance. No Scripture. Just personal opinion.
Please note: what that priest said is common of the world in general. Please note that the Priest was being Scriptrural:
Mark 16:16
King James Version (KJV)
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
1 Timothy 2:15
King James Version (KJV)
15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
Sincerely,
De Maria
