Tuesday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 504

Reading 1 from St. John's book of Revelations
Rv 14:14-19

I, John, looked and there was a white cloud,
and sitting on the cloud one who looked like a son of man,
with a gold crown on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand.
The Son of Man on the clouds is Jesus:

Matthew 24:30
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Another angel came out of the temple,crying out in a loud voice to the one sitting on the cloud,"Use your sickle and reap the harvest,for the time to reap has come,because the earth's harvest is fully ripe."So the one who was sitting on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth,and the earth was harvested.
Then an angel came out of the heavenly temple and called out to Jesus that it was time to harvest the earth.  And Jesus swung His sickle and the earth was harvested.

In the time of the harvest, remember what Jesus said in the Gospels:

Matthew 13:37-40
King James Version (KJV)
37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;
38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

And so, at this point in the recounting of John's vision, Jesus has begun the harvest.

Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven
who also had a sharp sickle.
Then another angel came from the altar, who was in charge of the fire,
and cried out in a loud voice
to the one who had the sharp sickle,
"Use your sharp sickle and cut the clusters from the earth's vines,
for its grapes are ripe."
So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and cut the earth's vintage.
He threw it into the great wine press of God's fury.

Now, another angel comes from out of the temple and this one also has a sickle like the Jesus.  And another angel calls to him from the heavenly altar, the one who is also in charge of the fire and this one says to the other, "Use your sickle and cut the grapes off of God's vines for they are ripe."  And that angel does so and the grapes are thrown into God's wine press of fury.

Remember the symbolism from John 15.
John 15
King James Version (KJV)
15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
Christ is the grapevine.  Therefore, grapes are the Christians which are on united with Him.  Note that they will be the first to be Judged by God:

1 Peter 4:17
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

This wine press is Purgatory.  Because the grapes tossed in there are ripe.  Note how they must suffer although they have produced good fruit:

1 Corinthians 3:10-15
King James Version (KJV)
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 96:10, 11-12, 13

R. (13b) The Lord comes to judge the earth.

Say among the nations: The LORD is king.
He has made the world firm, not to be moved;
he governs the peoples with equity.

R. The Lord comes to judge the earth.

Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice;
let the sea and what fills it resound;
let the plains be joyful and all that is in them!
Then shall all the trees of the forest exult.

R. The Lord comes to judge the earth.

Before the LORD, for he comes;
for he comes to rule the earth.
He shall rule the world with justice
and the peoples with his constancy.

R. The Lord comes to judge the earth.

The earth is firm and not to be moved-it is not a reference to the idea that the earth rotates around the sun.  It is a reference to the fact that the earth has its place in God's plan, right here where it sits, rotating around the sun and holding the creatures which Scripture reveals are God's beloved.

God governs all people with equity-that means that God does not consider the rich more important than the poor.  Every person will be judged according to God's perfect justice on Judgment day.

Romans 2:5
But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke
Lk 21:5-11

While some people were speaking about
how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings,
Jesus said, "All that you see here?
the days will come when there will not be left
a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down."
Jesus foresees the day that the Romans will destroy Jerusalem in 70ad.

Then they asked him,"Teacher, when will this happen?And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?"He answered,"See that you not be deceived,for many will come in my name, saying,'I am he,' and 'The time has come.'Do not follow them!
I believe Jesus is here, speaking in a veiled manner, both about the events that occurred after His crucifixion and of the events that will occur in the end of time.

When you hear of wars and insurrections,do not be terrified; for such things must happen first,but it will not immediately be the end."
Wars and rumors of wars have been heard of until now.  And yet the end is not here yet.

Then he said to them,
"Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues
from place to place;
and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky."

These things occurred after His crucifixion and have continued to this day.  Therefore, be prepared:
 Luke 12:39-48
King James Version (KJV)
39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.
40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?
42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.  47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Sincerely,

De Maria
