Friday of the Second Week of Lent 
Lectionary: 234

Reading 1GN 37:3-4, 12-13A, 17B-28A

Israel loved Joseph best of all his sons,
for he was the child of his old age;
and he had made him a long tunic.
When his brothers saw that their father loved him best of all his sons,  they hated him so much that they would not even greet him.

Israel, (aka Jacob) loved the son of Rachel more than his other 11 sons, who weere the children of Leah, his first wife and two concubines.  Rachel's son is Joseph.

Jacob made Joseph a beautiful coat of many colors. And his brothers became jealous of how much their father preferred Joseph.

One day, when his brothers had gone
to pasture their father’s flocks at Shechem,
Israel said to Joseph,  “Your brothers, you know, are tending our flocks at Shechem.  Get ready; I will send you to them.”

One day, Israel sent Joseph to help his brothers with the sheep.

So Joseph went after his brothers and caught up with them in Dothan.  They noticed him from a distance,
and before he came up to them, they plotted to kill him.

So, Joseph obediently went to do as he was told.  But when his brothers saw him, they plotted to kill him.

They said to one another: “Here comes that master dreamer!  Come on, let us kill him and throw him into one of the cisterns here;  we could say that a wild beast devoured him.  We shall then see what comes of his dreams.”

You really ought to read the whole story about Joseph.



His brothers hated him not just because he was favored by his father.  But also by God.  God had revealed to him in a dream that all his brothers would bow to Joseph.

When Reuben heard this,
he tried to save him from their hands, saying,
“We must not take his life.
Instead of shedding blood,” he continued,
“just throw him into that cistern there in the desert;
but do not kill him outright.”
His purpose was to rescue him from their hands
and return him to his father.

Reuben, the elder brother intended to saved him by having him cast into a well somewhere then coming back to get him.

So when Joseph came up to them,
they stripped him of the long tunic he had on;
then they took him and threw him into the cistern,
which was empty and dry.

So, that's what they did.  They took his clothes and threw him in a dry well.

They then sat down to their meal.Looking up, they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead,
their camels laden with gum, balm and resin
to be taken down to Egypt.
Judah said to his brothers:
“What is to be gained by killing our brother and concealing his blood?
Rather, let us sell him to these Ishmaelites,
instead of doing away with him ourselves.
After all, he is our brother, our own flesh.”

Then they saw some slave drivers coming and instead of killing him, they decided to sell him off as a slave.

His brothers agreed.They sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver.

They sold their brother for twenty pieces of silver.  The same price that the Jews paid Judas Iscariot for Jesus.

When the LORD called down a famine on the land
and ruined the crop that sustained them,
He sent a man before them,
Joseph, sold as a slave.

he sent Joseph ahead of them, sold as a slave.

They had weighed him down with fetters,
and he was bound with chains,
Till his prediction came to pass
and the word of the LORD proved him true.

He was tethered and fettered, but his prophecy came true and showed that God was with him.

The king sent and released him,
the ruler of the peoples set him free.
He made him lord of his house

Pharao released him and made him the lord of all his house even his own kingdom. 

GospelMT 21:33-43, 45-46

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people:
“Hear another parable.
There was a landowner who planted a vineyard,
put a hedge around it,
dug a wine press in it, and built a tower.
Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.

Jesus told the Jews a fable.  A story with a lesson.
"there was a farmer who planted many grape vines.  He put a fence around it and built a building where the grapes would be processed into wine.  Then he leased it to some contractors and he went away."

When vintage time drew near,
he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.
But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat,
another they killed, and a third they stoned.

When it was time to harvest the grapes and process the wine, he sent his servants to the contractors to get his payment.  But the contractors killed the servant.

Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way.

So, he sent another servant.  But they killed him also.

Finally, he sent his son to them,
thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another,
‘This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’
They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

Then the owner sent his son, thinking, "they will respect my son."  But the evil contractors killed him too thinking, "This would have been the son's but now he is dead, it will be ours."

What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?”

Then Jesus asked the Jews, "What will the owner do to the contractors when he comes back?"

They answered him,
“He will put those wretched men to a wretched death
and lease his vineyard to other tenants
who will give him the produce at the proper times.”

They answered not knowing that the story was about them, "He will kill them all and rent his farm to honest people who will pay him on time."

Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures:
The stone that the builders rejectedhas become the cornerstone;by the Lord has this been done,and it is wonderful in our eyes?

Then Jesus asked them if they had ever read in the Bible, about the stone that the builders had rejected.  How it was now the stone which held the whole building together because God had done it.

Therefore, I say to you,
the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you
and given to a people that will produce its fruit.”

Then he said, "The Kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to the Gentiles who will do the works of God which you refused to do."

When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables,
they knew that he was speaking about them.
And although they were attempting to arrest him,
they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet.

When the leaders of the Jews heard this, they knew He was referring to them and they wanted to arrest Him, but they were afraid because the people loved Him.

Prayer for a new Pope

Come Holy Spirit!

Fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.  Send forth they spirit and they shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth.

Amen!

Dear Lord,

You have given us such wonderful Popes.  Full of faith and love.  Pope Benedict being such a wonderful example.  Please provide us with a Pope that is even more loving and faithful than any other that preceded him.

For this we pray, in the name of Christ and all the saints.

Amen!

Why didn't John say so?

Lutero said:
The problem is that if it was Mary why didn't John say so? 

Because he was describing his dream.

Why say something about her when there is nothing in the gospels about her like this?

I don't know what you mean. The Gospels are precisely about this. The mother of a King is a Queen. Jesus is the King of Heaven, is He not?

For example, where does it say that she was in the wilderness for 1260 days? 

That is how long she remained in the desert with St. Joseph and her Child.

How would you respond to the pain in childbirth if Mary was supposedly sinless?

The pain of childbirth described in Rev 12 is symbolic to the emotional pain which St. Mary endured in serving her vocation as the Mother of God.

The OT which Jesus used

The Old Testament Septuagint was written by Jews. It is the version of the Old Testament which Jesus used. The Catholic Church uses the Septuagint version of the Old Testament. It includes those books which Protestants call “Apocrypha”.

This means the RC Church is not the one true church established by Jesus as you have rightly pointed out that it does not use books of the OT which Jesus used but “spurious” ones to support un-biblical teachings. Most likely because of ego problems caused by the reformation

Read what I said again Lutero.   The Septuagint is the version of Scripture which Jesus used. And it includes the Deuterocanonicals, which the Protestants call apocryphal because they adopted the view of the enemies of Christ. Yes, the enemies of Christ, the Jews, denied the Deuterocanonicals because they were accepted by Christ.

Thursday of the Second Week of Lent 
Lectionary: 233

Reading 1JER 17:5-10

Thus says the LORD:
Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings,
who seeks his strength in flesh,
whose heart turns away from the LORD.

Frequently, people misunderstand this verse.  They claim that God is here condemning a man who trusts any man whatsoever.  But that isn't true.  This is an admonition against trusting men over God.  Putting men before God is a sin.

However, there is nothing wrong with trusting men who teach us about God.  Scripture says:

Hebrews 13:7
King James Version (KJV)
7 Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

He is like a barren bush in the desert
that enjoys no change of season,
But stands in a lava waste,
a salt and empty earth.

The person who turns away from God to seek after men is dead but doesn't yet know it.  He is like a bush in the waterless desert, it will dry out because no rain will ever fall upon it.  

Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose hope is the LORD.
He is like a tree planted beside the waters
that stretches out its roots to the stream:

Happy is the man who has faith in God, who waits on the Lord's goodness.  He is like a tree beside a river whose roots reach out to the water.

It fears not the heat when it comes,its leaves stay green;
In the year of drought it shows no distress,
but still bears fruit.

When the heat comes, it remains green because it is  near the cool stream.  When there is no rain, water still comes down to it and it bears fruit.

More tortuous than all else is the human heart,beyond remedy; who can understand it?
I, the LORD, alone probe the mind
and test the heart,  To reward everyone according to his ways, according to the merit of his deeds.

No one understands the human heart but God.  God reads the mind and tries the heart in order to recompense everyone according to their works.

Happy are they who wait on God and follow the ways of the righteous.  Happy are they who avoid the ways of evildoers.  Happy they who love the law of God and think about it everyday.

The righteous man who loves God is like a tree that is planted near a river.  It will always bear fruit and its leaves will never wither.

Not so, the wicked, not so;
they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
For the LORD watches over the way of the just,
but the way of the wicked vanishes.
R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

But evildoers and sinners will be blown away like dry corn sheaves.  God protects the righteous and the wicked He punishes. 

GospelLK 16:19-31

Jesus said to the Pharisees:
“There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day.

 Jesus said to the Pharisees, "There was a rich man who dressed in fine clothes and ate the best food everyday."

And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.

Outside his door, a poor man lay who would have loved to eat the left overs from the rich man's table.  The poor man was so ill, that he could not fight off the dogs who licked upon his sores.

When the poor man died,
he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried,
and from the netherworld, where he was in torment,
he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off
and Lazarus at his side.

They both died and the poor man's soul was carried by the angels to the "bosom of Abraham.  The bosom of Abraham is also called the "Limbo of the Fathers" where the Patriarchs waited to be admitted into heaven.

The rich man, however, his soul went to the netherworld, which is either hell or purgatory.  And being in torment there, he raises his eyes to heaven and sees Abraham and Lazarus there.

And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me.
Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.’

And so, Dies, the rich man, prays to the Saint, Father Abraham for his intercession.  He says, "Father, please send Lazarus down here to help me and cool me off."

Abraham replied, ‘My child,
remember that you received what was good during your lifetime  while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;
but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.
Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established
to prevent anyone from crossing
who might wish to go from our side to yours
or from your side to ours.’

But Father Abraham would have none of it.  He explains why.  "You had a lifetime to help Lazarus.  But you would not lift a finger to do so.  Now, Lazarus is resting and it is your turn to suffer.  However, even if I wanted to help you, I can't.  Because no one can cross over from here to there."

He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him
to my father’s house,
for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them,
lest they too come to this place of torment.’

So, Dies said, "Please then, send him to my brothers.  They don't know about this place of suffering and if they don't change their ways, they will soon join me."

But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets.
Let them listen to them.’

Father Abraham said, "They are Jews and they have the teachings of Moses and the Prophets.  Let them listen to them.

He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham,
but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

But Dies said, "If someone comes back from the grave to warn them, they will turn away from their sins."

Then Abraham said,
‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded
if someone should rise from the dead.’“

If they don't listen to Moses and the Prophets, they won't listen even if someone comes back from the dead.

This is a beautiful story for many reasons.
1.  Lazarus actually died and came back from the dead.  But the Jews did not believe and only schemed to kill him in order to keep his resurrection from convincing others of the power of Jesus Christ.
John 12:8-10

8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; 

2.  Then, Jesus was put to death and He came back.  And again, the Jews refused to believe.

So, it shows that Father Abraham was right.  The Jews refused to convert no matter who came back from the dead.

3.  Another reason I like it is because it is a great proof of the doctrine of the communion of Saints.  It shows Dies, the rich man, praying to Father Abraham.  It depicts the authority of Abraham as without asking anyone what he could or could not do, he told Dies that he would not send Lazarus over to him.

4.  It is also proof of the doctrine of Purgatory as Dies was essentially praying for the welfare of his brothers.  He was interceding for them.  Although in his case, his brothers were too wicked to be helped.  The doctrine is still confirmed.  

Ten days off of purgatory?

Or you can get just as many indulgences by quickly reciting, "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph - pray for me" one hundred times. You can gain these indulgences while watching a TV commercial, sitting at a stop light, during the 7th inning stretch - the possibilites are endless and racking up the "time out of purgatory" is always the double bonus and that extra-reinforced 'safety net' in your heavenly 'indulgence account' always at the ready for "future withdrawal." Just wondering ... if by chance, you don't use all of your stored indulgences, can they be transferred to someone else's indulgence account?

As usual, all you can do is build straw men and knock them down. Probably for your own amusement.

However, show me the true Catholic Teaching on this matter and I will show you how it is completely in line with the Teachings of Jesus Christ in Scripture:

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

¹⁷ Pray without ceasing.
¹⁸ In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Yeah, your altar call is not in Scripture. But indulgences are very much in Scripture.

Wednesday of the Second Week of Lent

Reading 1JER 18:18-20

The people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem said,
“Come, let us contrive a plot against Jeremiah.
It will not mean the loss of instruction from the priests,
nor of counsel from the wise, nor of messages from the prophets.  And so, let us destroy him by his own tongue;
let us carefully note his every word.”

Heed me, O LORD,
and listen to what my adversaries say.
Must good be repaid with evil
that they should dig a pit to take my life?
Remember that I stood before you
to speak in their behalf,
to turn away your wrath from them.

R. (17b) Save me, O Lord, in your kindness.You will free me from the snare they set for me,
for you are my refuge.

GospelMT 20:17-28

As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem,
he took the Twelve disciples aside by themselves,
and said to them on the way,
“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and hand him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and scourged and crucified,
and he will be raised on the third day.”

On their way to Jerusalem, Jesus warned the Apostles that the Jews were going to arrest Him, torture Him and put Him to death.

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons  and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.  He said to her, “What do you wish?”
She answered him,  “Command that these two sons of mine sit,  one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom.”

The mother of James and John, a typical mother who can be forgiven because of her great love, didn't seem to be interested in Jesus' passion.  Because she was more interested in that which mattered to her, the destiny of her children.   So, she asked Jesus to command that her children sit at His left and right hand in His Kingdom.

Jesus said in reply,“You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”
They said to him, “We can.” He replied, “My chalice you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left,
this is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

Jesus replied that this was not His decision to make but the Father's in heaven.

When the ten heard this, they became indignant at the two brothers.  But Jesus summoned them and said,
“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt.  But it shall not be so among you.  Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve  and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Then, all the Apostles became indignant that the Sons of Thunder should be asking for a higher position in the Kingdom of God.  So Jesus explained that they should not seek to be lords over each other.  But they should seek to be the servants one of the other.  Because it is the servant of all who will be the greater in  God's Kingdom.

In the same way, Jesus concluded, He came to do good for mankind and to die for the salvation of the world.

Even Satan obeys God

That's right, it wasn't about Purgatory.

It has nothing to do with purgatory and everything to do with trials and sufferings on this earth.

But it sets a Biblical principle. We can pray for our brethren and God will set them free from the oppression of Satan.

2 Cor 12:7 "So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited."

We are told that Satan seeks to kill, steal and destroy. Jesus came to DESTROY the *works* of the enemy. The word translated "destroy" is from the Greek "luó" which is translated as "loose, untie, release, break, destroy, set at naught, contravene, annul. 

That Satan is able to kill, steal and destroy upon the earth does not = purgatory.

Who said that it did? However, Satan does mean Devil. And Jesus showed that He can free a woman from the oppression of Satan. Thus He can free anyone from the oppression of Satan. Whether it be an illness or any other form of oppression.

Jesus is warning them that they are going to be persecuted, imprisoned and go through tribulations even unto death.

Yeah. Persecuted, imprisoned and suffer tribulations by the Devil:
Revelation 2:10

¹⁰ Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

As Jesus told us just as the world hated Him, the world would hate Christians. Satan hates Jesus and therefore he hates Christians. So, Satan riles up the world to take Christians prisoner and throw them into real-life jails. Not purgatory.

Yeah, that's purgatory.

Still no purgatory.

You may not have a name for it. But we do. That's purgatory.

Luke 22: 31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; "

In the same way the Christians in the Rev verse you quoted were NOT thrown into purgatory, but were rather imprisoned and/or killed, Simon was not thrown by Satan into a giant sifter while Satan ground him out the meshing.

Jesus didn't say that Simon would be thrown into prison. But Scripture says that some saved Christians will be cast into prison by the devil. That prison is purgatory.

What exactly do you mean by "even Satan does the will of God"?

Read Job. Satan tested Job according to God's will.


Job 1:9-12

9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.

Eph 3: 8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.

That is simply telling you that the Church is infallible. The Church teaches the Wisdom of God according to the eternal purpose of Jesus Christ.

There are things in the heavenlies, including Satan's rebellion and its ongoing aftermath, that are a part of Christ's mission and what He accomplished on earth. Our salvation isn't just all about us, but includes God's use of us to reveal His manifold wisdom to spiritual beings in heavenly places.

The infallible Church will reveal God's manifold wisdom.

Still no purgatory. And no "purgatory is Satan's bond" bull is going to fly.

Reasonable readers will see that the place being described, is purgatory.

Because there is no purgatory. We may suffer trials, tribulations, sickness and weakness, deaths and sorrows, pain and terrors, IN THIS LIFE, but death ends that.

If you want to ignore the words of Scripture.

John 14: 1 “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 “ If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

Sure. After many of them have gone through purgatory:
1 Corinthians 3:15

¹⁵ If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Jesus went to prepare a place for us. And that place was not purgatory.

True. But many will not get to that place without first going through purgatory.

As Stephen was being stoned, he gazed into heaven and saw Jesus STANDING at the right hand of the throne of God and called out "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." As Jesus said I will "receive you to Myself." He does not send us to Purgatory first.

But the devil does.

You guys describe and think of purgatory in a completely different way than the Roman Church used to. I've seen modern RCers talk about it like being a kind of bath. Augustine described it "This fire of Purgatory will be more severe than any pain that can be felt, seen or conceived in this world."

Have you not read in Scripture:
Hebrews 5:13

¹³ For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

1 Corinthians 9:22

²² To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

The Church does her best to explain things in a simple manner that can be understood by the many. Unfortunately, those who oppose the Church, twist anything she says to their own destruction.

But Scripture tells us in 1 Thess 4: 15 "For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words."

No bus stop at Purgatory - straight to be with the Lord.

You're talking about one very special circumstance. The very last few who will survive the final destruction of the world. They will have already been purged of their sins in immense suffering. And Scripture says:
1 Peter 4:1

1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind:
for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

The sufferings of those final survivors, who are left, will have purged their sins. No need to be purged again.
