Faith and obedience

ROBERT May 23, 2013 at 7:21 pmI have to say, it does matter what the pope was actually saying. …. (And yes, I know he wasn’t speaking ex cathedra. The pope is infallible except when he’s not. It’s a weasely doctrine.)
Are you having trouble accepting that you don’t have all the answers? You might want to consider what Scripture says:
Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
And:
Hebrews 13:17
King James Version (KJV)
17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
Or do you consider those weasely doctrines too?

Only those who obey Christ will be saved

Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Those who do not want to obey Christ, simply do not love Christ:
John 14: 23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

"For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law," (Rom. 3:28).

Only those who work are justified. But not by their works. They are justified by God because they work in accordance to His Will. Again, as it is written:

Romans 2:13(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

"But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness," (Rom. 4:5).

This is a reference to Abraham. Did Abraham work? Sure he did. By faith Abraham obeyed God:
Hebrews 11: 8By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

That is the obedience of faith. It isn't faith alone. But faith accompanied by works of obedience.

“I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly," (Gal. 2:21).

Righteousness does not come through the Law. But the Law leads us to righteousness:
Galatians 3: 24Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
"You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? 2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?" (Gal. 3:1-3).

The Law justifies no man. But if you don't keep the Law in the Commandments, God won't justify you. Very simple.

If you don't add to faith, virtue and works of charity, God will not save you.

2 Peter 1 5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

You can’t just turn to Christ. You have to turn to Him and obey.

Hi again Steve,
Nick’s response was excellent! I’ll add my two bits anyway.

You don’t get zilch for keeping the commandments.
Please produce this from Scripture. Here’s what I see:
Matthew 19:17
King James Version (KJV)
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
John 14:21
King James Version (KJV)
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Revelation 22:14
King James Version (KJV)
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Please produce even one verse that says that we get zilch if we keep the Commandments.
It is what we are supposed to do. Jesus said that “you don’t praise a slave for doing what he is supposed to do.”
That’s not what He said.
1st Jesus produced a human example. Not a Godly one:
Hebrews 6:10
King James Version (KJV)
10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
2nd He said the slave should not expect a reward from his human master.
3rd He did not say that the slave would not receive a reward from God.
And NO ONE keeps the commandments. “No one is good, no not one.”
You are mistaken. Scripture is clear that some have kept the Commandments:
Luke 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
St. James tells us that” if you break one commandment, it is if you have broken them all.”
Nick answered it perfectly. That doesn’t mean that we can’t keep the Commandments. That means that if a man keeps all the Commandments but one, then he is liable to all of them. For instance, an adulterer who helps an old lady across the street is still an adulterer and remains on the wrong side of God’s law.
But a man who repents of his sins and in atonement gives money to the poor, for that man, all is clean:
Luke 11:41
But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
Zachias did that and he was praised by Christ:
Luke 19:8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. 9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
Turn to Christ and His forgiveness for sinners. Real sinners. The kind that, deep down, we know that we are.
You can’t just turn to Christ. You have to turn to Him and obey.
Matthew 7:21
King James Version (KJV)
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
That is a message that is loud and clear in Scripture. Faith alone, is dead.
Sincerely,
De Maria

Those who save themselves by faith alone do not understand

Calvin:

I'm telling you, you don't understand Scripture. As you prove with each post you make...twisting Scripture to your own destruction.

Now, please tell us why you need a SAVIOR if you can save yourself.
Read the Scripture, I save myself by turning to and obeying the Saviour.
Philippians 2:12-13

King James Version (KJV)

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Of course, those who save themselves by faith alone would not understand.

Sincerely,

De Maria
