Stations of the Cross

Stations of the Cross

Opening

Galatians 2:20
I am crucified
with Christ:
nevertheless I live;
 yet not I,
 but Christ liveth in me:
and the life
which I now live
in the flesh
I live by the faith
of the Son of God,
who loved me,
and gave himself for me.

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
 O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by Thy cross
 and resurrection
Thou hast redeemed
the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

1st Station:

Jesus is before Pilate

O Jesus!
 so meek
and uncomplaining,
teach me
resignation in trials.

Matthew 27:2
And when they
had bound him,
they led him
away, and
delivered him
to Pontius Pilate
the governor.

Matthew 27:16-22

16 And they had
then a notable prisoner,
called Barabbas.

17 Therefore when they
were gathered together,
Pilate said unto them,
Whom will ye
that I release unto you?
Barabbas, or Jesus
which is called Christ?...
21 … They said, Barabbas.
22 Pilate saith unto them,
 What shall I do then
with Jesus called Christ?
They all say unto him,
 Let him be crucified.

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

2nd Station:

Jesus carries His cross

My Jesus,
this Cross
should be mine,
not Thine;
my sins
crucified Thee.

Matthew 27:31
31 And after that
they had mocked him,
 they took the robe
 off from him,
and put his
 own raiment on him,
and led him away
to crucify him.

John 19:17
17 And he
bearing his cross
went forth
into a place
called the place
of a skull,
which is called
 in the Hebrew
 Golgotha:

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
 O Christ, and praise Thee.
Because by Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast redeemed
 the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

3rd Station:

 Jesus falls

the first time

O Jesus!
by this first fall,
never let me fall
into mortal sin.

Psalm 22:14
14 I am poured
out like water,
and all my bones
are out of joint:
my heart is like wax;
it is melted in the
midst of my bowels.

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
 O Christ, and praise Thee.
Because by Thy cross
 and resurrection
Thou hast redeemed
the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

4th Station:

Jesus meets his mother

O Jesus!
may no human tie,
however dear,
 keep me from following
 the road of the Cross.

Luke 2:34-35
34 And Simeon blessed them,
and said unto Mary his mother,
Behold, this child is set
for the fall and rising again
 of many in Israel;
and for a sign which
shall be spoken against;
35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce
 through thy own soul also,)
that the thoughts of many
 hearts may be revealed.

Let us pray:

Through her Heart, His sorrow sharing,
All His bitter anguish bearing,
Lo! the piercing sword had passed.

O how sad and sore distressed
Was that Mother, highly blessed,
Of the Sole-Begotten One.

Mournful, with Heart's prostration,
Mother meek, the bitter Passion
Saw She of Her glorious Son.

Who on Christ's dear Mother gazing,
In Her trouble so amazing,
Born of woman, would not weep?

We adore Thee, O Christ, and praise Thee.
Because by Thy cross and resurrection
Thou hast redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

5th Station:

Simon of Cyrene

helps Jesus

to carry his cross

Oh Jesus,
You said, "take up thy cross
and follow me"
Grant that I
may with patience
suffer all for Thee.

Matthew 27:32
And as they came out,
they found a man of Cyrene,
Simon by name:
him they compelled
 to bear his cross.

Mark 10:21
Then Jesus beholding him
 loved him,
 and said unto him,
One thing thou lackest:
go thy way,
sell whatsoever thou hast,
 and give to the poor,
 and thou shalt have treasure
 in heaven:
and come,
 take up the cross,
 and follow me.

Let us pray,

St. Simeon,
The Lord, opened your eyes
and heart and gave you a share
in his cross.
Pray for us to God,
that we may also
be raised to
eternal life.
Through Jesus Christ
Our Lord.
Amen.

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

6th Station:

Veronica wipes

the face of Jesus

O Jesus!
Thou didst imprint
Thy sacred features
upon Veronica's veil;
stamp them also
indelibly upon my heart.

Pslams 22
11 Be not far from me;
for trouble is near;
for there is none to help.

Isaiah 53
2 ... he hath no form
nor comeliness;
and when we shall see him,
 there is no beauty that
we should desire him.

Proverbs 7:15
Therefore came
I forth to meet thee,
diligently to seek thy face,
and I have found thee.

Let us pray:

St. Veronica,
you gave Christ a towel
on His way to Cavalry
which He used to wipe
the Precious Blood
from His Holy Face.
 In return for this
great act of kindness
He left you His most
Holy image on the towel.
Pray for us to Our Lord
that His Holy Face
may be imprinted on our hearts
 so that we may
be always mindful
 of the Passion and Death
of Our lord Jesus Christ,
through the same
Christ our Lord,
Amen.

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

7th Station:

Jesus falls

the second time

By Thy second fall,
 preserve me,
dear Lord,
from relapse into sin.

Psalm 22
12 Many bulls
have compassed me:
strong bulls of Bashan
 have beset me round.
13 They gaped upon me
with their mouths,
as a ravening
 and a roaring lion.

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

8th Station:

 Jesus consoles

the women of Jerusalem

My greatest consolation
would be to hear Thee say:
"Many sins are forgiven thee,
because thou hast loved much."

Luke 23
27 And there followed him
a great company of people,
and of women,
which also bewailed
and lamented him.
28 But Jesus turning
unto them said,
Daughters of Jerusalem,
weep not for me,
but weep for yourselves,
and for your children.
29 For, behold, the
days are coming,
in the which they shall say,
Blessed are the barren,
and the wombs that never bare,
and the paps which
 never gave suck.
30 Then shall they begin to say
to the mountains,
 Fall on us;
and to the hills,
Cover us.

Luke 19
41 And when he
was come near,
he beheld the city,
and wept over it,
42 Saying, If thou hadst known,
even thou, at least
in this thy day,
the things which
belong unto thy peace!
 but now they are
hid from thine eyes.
43 For the days
shall come upon thee,
that thine enemies
shall cast a trench about thee,
and compass thee round,
and keep thee in on every side,
44 And shall lay thee
 even with the ground,
and thy children within thee;
and they shall not leave in thee
one stone upon another;
 because thou knewest not
the time of thy visitation.

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

9th Station:

Jesus falls a third time

O Jesus!
when weary
upon life's long journey,
 be Thou my strength
and my perseverance.

Psalms 22
19 But be not thou far from me,
O Lord: O my strength,
haste thee to help me.
20 Deliver my soul
from the sword;
my darling
from the power of the dog.
21 Save me from the lion's mouth:
for thou hast heard me
from the horns of the unicorns.
22 I will declare thy name
 unto my brethren:
in the midst of the congregation
 will I praise thee.

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

10th Station

Jesus Stripped

of His Garments

My soul has been robbed
of its robe of innocence;
clothe me, dear Jesus,
with the garb
of penance and contrition.

Psalm 21 (Douay Rheims)

They have dug
my hands and feet.
[18] They have
numbered all my bones.
And they have
looked and stared upon me.
[19] They parted my
garments amongst them;
and upon my
vesture they cast lots.

Matthew 27:35
And they crucified him,
 and parted his garments,
 casting lots:
 that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken
 by the prophet,
They parted my
garments among them,
and upon my vesture
did they cast lots.

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

11th Station
Jesus Nailed
to the Cross

Thou didst forgive
Thy enemies;
 my God, teach
 me to forgive
as you do

Psalm 22
16 For dogs have
 compassed me:
 the assembly of the
wicked have inclosed me:
 they pierced
 my hands and my feet.

Mark 15:25
And it was the third hour,
and they crucified him.

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

12th Station
Jesus Dies on the Cross

Thou art dying, my Jesus,
 but Thy Sacred Heart
still throbs with love
 for Thy sinful children.

Luke 23
34 Then said Jesus,
Father, forgive them;
for they know not
what they do…..
44 And it was about the sixth hour,
and there was a darkness
over all the earth
until the ninth hour.
45 And the sun was darkened,
and the veil of the temple
 was rent in the midst.
46 And when Jesus
had cried with a loud voice,
he said, Father,
into thy hands
 I commend my spirit:
and having said thus,
he gave up the ghost.

Let us pray,

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

Thirteenth Station
Jesus Taken Down
 from the Cross

Receive me into thy arms,
O Sorrowful Mother;
and obtain for me
perfect contrition for my sins.

Luke 23
50 And, behold,
there was a man
named Joseph,
a counsellor;
and he was a
good man, and a just:
51 (The same
had not consented
to the counsel
and deed of them;)
he was of Arimathaea,
 a city of the Jews:
who also himself
waited for the kingdom of God.
52 This man went unto Pilate,
and begged the body of Jesus.
53 And he took it down,
and wrapped it in linen,
and laid it in a sepulcher
that was hewn in stone,
wherein never man
before was laid.

Let us pray,

Merciful God,
whose servant
Joseph of Arimathea,
with reverence and godly fear,
prepared the body
 of our Lord and Savior
 for burial and laid
 it in his own tomb:
grant to us, your
 faithful people,
grace and courage
 to love and serve Jesus
with sincere devotion
all the days of our life.
Amen.

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

Fourteenth Station
Jesus Laid in the Sepulchre

When I receive Thee
into my heart in Holy Communion,
 O Jesus,
make it a fit abiding place
for Thy adorable Body.
Amen.

John 19
39 And there came
also Nicodemus,
which at the first
came to Jesus by night,
and brought a mixture
of myrrh and aloes,
about an hundred
 pound weight.
40 Then took
they the body of Jesus,
and wound it in linen clothes
with the spices,
as the manner of
the Jews is to bury.
41 Now in the place
where he was crucified
 there was a garden;
and in the garden
a new sepulcher,
wherein was never man yet laid.
42 There laid they Jesus
therefore because of the
 Jews' preparation day;
for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

Let us pray:

Merciful God,
whose servant Nicodemus
was a secret disciple of Christ,
meeting him by night
 to avoid the wrath
of the other members
 of the Sanhedrin,
and eventually
spoke out to that body
to remind them that Jesus
had a right to a hearing
and with reverence
 and godly fear
prepared the
 body of our Lord
and Savior for burial:
 Grant to us,
your faithful people,
grace and courage to love
 and serve Jesus
with sincere devotion
 all the days of our life;
 through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you
 and the Holy Ghost,
one God, for ever and ever.

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

15th Station
The Resurrection

Matthew 28

28 In the end of the sabbath,
as it began to dawn
toward the first day of the week,
came Mary Magdalene
and the other Mary
 to see the sepulchre.
2 And, behold,
there was a great earthquake:
for the angel of the Lord
descended from heaven,
 and came and
rolled back the stone
 from the door,
 and sat upon it.
3 His countenance
was like lightning,
and his raiment
 white as snow:
4 And for fear of him
 the keepers did shake,
and became as dead men.
5 And the angel answered
and said unto the women,
Fear not ye: for I
 know that ye seek Jesus,
which was crucified.
6 He is not here:
for he is risen, as he said.
Come, see the place
where the Lord lay.
7 And go quickly,
 and tell his disciples that
 he is risen from the dead;
and, behold, he goeth
before you into Galilee;
 there shall ye see
him: lo, I have told you.

1 Corinthians 15
12 Now if Christ be preached
that he rose from the dead,
how say some among you
that there is no
resurrection of the dead?
13 But if there be no
resurrection of the dead,
then is Christ not risen:

14 And if Christ be not risen,
 then is our preaching vain,
and your faith is also vain.

15 Yea, and we are found
 false witnesses of God;
 because we have
 testified of God
 that he raised up Christ:
whom he raised not up,
if so be that the dead rise not.

16 For if the dead rise not,
then is not Christ raised:

17 And if Christ be not raised,
your faith is vain;
ye are yet in your sins.

18 Then they also
which are fallen asleep in Christ
are perished.
19 If in this life only
we have hope in Christ,
we are of all men most miserable.

20 But now is Christ
risen from the dead,
and become the firstfruits
of them that slept.

21 For since by man came death,
 by man came also the
resurrection of the dead….

55 O death, where is thy sting?
O grave, where is thy victory?
56 The sting of death is sin;
and the strength of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God,
which giveth us the victory through
 our Lord Jesus Christ.

We adore Thee,
O Christ,
and praise Thee.
Because by
Thy cross
and resurrection
Thou hast
redeemed the world.

Our Father,

Hail Mary

Glory Be

To end:

Stabat Mater

At the Cross her station keeping
Stood the mournful Mother weeping,
Close to Jesus to the last.

Through her Heart, His sorrow sharing,
All His bitter anguish bearing,
Lo! the piercing sword had passed.

O how sad and sore distressed
Was that Mother, highly blessed,
Of the Sole-Begotten One.

Mournful, with Heart's prostration,
Mother meek, the bitter Passion
Saw She of Her glorious Son.

Who on Christ's dear Mother gazing,
In Her trouble so amazing,
Born of woman, would not weep?

Who on Christ's dear Mother thinking,
Such a cup of sorrow drinking,
Would not share Her sorrow deep?

For His people's sins rejected,
Saw Her Jesus unprotected.
Saw with thorns, with scourges rent.

Saw Her Son from judgement taken,
Her Beloved in death forsaken,
Till His Spirit forth He sent.

Fount of love and holy sorrow,
Mother, may my spirit borrow
Somewhat of your woe profound.

Unto Christ with pure emotion,
Raise my contrite heart's devotion,
To read love in every wound.

Those Five Wounds on Jesus smitten,
Mother! in my heart be written,
Deep as in your own they be.

You, your Saviour's Cross did bare,
You, your Son's rebuke did share.
Let me share them both with Thee.

In the Passion of my Maker,
Be my sinful soul partaker,
Weep 'til death and weep with you.

Mine with you be that sad station,
There to watch the great salvation,
Wrought upon the atoning Tree.

Virgin, you of virgins fairest,
May the bitter woe Thou bearest
Make on me impression deep.

Thus Christ's dying may I carry,
With Him in His Passion tarry,
And His Wounds in memory keep.

May His Wound both wound and heal me,
He enkindle, cleanse, strengthen me,
By His Cross my hope and stay.

May He, when the mountains quiver,
From that flame which burns forever,
Shield me on the Judgement Day.

Jesus, may Your Cross defend me,
And Your Mother's prayer befriend me;
Let me die in Your embrace.

When to dust my dust returns,
Grant a soul, that to You yearns,
In Your paradise a place.

Amen.

Mary, Mother of Mercy, Pray for us!
